DUAL DERBY WINNER TO UNDERGO SURGERY FOR BONE CHIP

TRAINER Leon Macdonald confirmed today that one of the early favorites, Rebel Raider, is out of the Melbourne Cup and will have to undergo surgery.

Rebel Raider, winner of the Victorian and South Australian Derbys, has suffered a bone chip in a rear fetlock joint, which was detected after trackwork yesterday.

Macdonald said the four-year-old would miss the Spring Carnival and was also unlikely to contest the Autumn in Sydney because she failed to adapt to that way of racing this year.

He told Sport 927 in Melbourne: “I do not think there is any doubt that he will recover fully from this, especially being a hind leg. It has just come at a bad time.”
