THOMPSON TAKES OVER - COYLE TO TRAIN SMALLER TEAM

JASON Coyle has resigned as private trainer for wealthy owner, Nathan Tinkler, paving the way for John Thompson to take over the massive Patinack Farm team.

Patinack Farm confirmed that the two parties had mutually agreed their current relationship was unsuitable and had decided to proceed on a different commercial basis.

"Jason will continue to train some horses for Patinack Farm but the relationshipwill be a more traditional owner-trainer relationship, with a smaller team of horses," the Patinack statement said.

“Jason’s contribution to Patinack has been significant and we thank him for his effort and dedication. He is a talented, young trainer with a lot to offer the racing industry. I wish him every success in the future and look forward to further success together.” Patinack Farm chairman, Nathan Tinkler said.

Coyle added: “I have tendered my resignation as private trainer to Patinack Farm, to pursue my career as a public trainer in Sydney. Nathan has been a great supporter and I look forward to continuing my relationship with Patinack Farm. I am
disappointed that I will not be training horses like Trusting and Onemorenomore, but I wish Nathan and Patinack Farm the best of luck with all the horses.

"I hope that there will be some owners out there, who see me as a trainer of Group 1 winners, and who will support me with some horses to train," Coyle said.

Coyle only linked with Patinack last year after Tinkler parted ways with trainer Anthony Cummings. During a short but successful association Coyle prepared two Group 1 winners – Onemorenomore in the Champagne Stakes at Randwick and Linky Dink in the T J Smith at Eagle Farm.

It was announced last month that John Thompson, the long-time foreman for Bart Cummings, would join Patinack Farm with the big team to be split between he and Coyle.

Steward Marc Van Gestel confirmed today that Racing NSW had been advised Thompson would take over training of the entire Patinack team. “(Chief Steward) Ray Murrihy received official confirmation from John Thompson this morning,” Van Gestel said.

Coyle, formerly based in Newcastle, had been hired by Patinack Farm to open their complex at Warwick Farm in stables originally set up for the Randwick horses relocated during the Pope’s visit last winter. This was after Patinack’s original No 1 Sydney trainer Anthony Cummings declined to move from his long-standing Randwick base.

Thompson was lured from his position as Randwick foreman for Bart Cummings where he had been for eight years. He was initially given one stable barn at Warwick Farm, and on Saturday at Randwick had his first runners as trainer.

At that stage he had some 35 horses in work. Today he has around 100 horses in two barns, including the Group 2 WFA Warwick Stakes (1400m) winner Trusting, which was second to Denman in the Group 1 Golden Rose over 1400m two weeks ago.

Trusting was expected to run in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes over 1400m at Randwick on September 26. The promising colt is now to go straight to Melbourne for the $1 million G1 Caulfield Guineas, 1600m, on October 10.
