GROUP 1 TURNBULL STAKES ATTRACTS SOME BIG NAME GALLOPERS

THE stars of spring step out at Flemington on Saturday to contest a high-quality day of thoroughbred racing in a full dress rehearsal for the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Every race on the card boasts Listed or Group status, including three Group 2 fixtures and the headlining $502,000 Group 1 Turnbull Stakes.

The headline race, featuring Emirates Melbourne Cup winning horses Viewed (Bart Cummings) and Efficient (John Sadler), Cox Plate winners Maldivian (Mark Kavanagh) and  El Segundo (Collin Little), Caulfield Cup champion Master O’Reilly and cups favourite Vigor (both Danny O’Brian), will test the form of many of the favoured gallopers for spring’s premier races.

The impressive race card offers more than $1.8 million in prize money and includes the Group 2 $201,500 Blazer Stakes, $251,500 Edward Manifold Stakes and $251,500 Gilgai Stakes, confirming Melbourne Cup Preview Day as one of the finest on the Australian racing calendar.

“The Victoria Racing Club is proud to herald in spring racing at Flemington with such a high-quality racing program. The statistics tell the story: eight Group 1 winning horses and a combined $27.5 million in prize money amongst the runners in the Turnbull Stakes alone,” said Dale Monteith, VRC Chief Executive.

Saturday’s nine-race program at Flemington begins at 12.00 noon.

Patrons travelling from Melbourne's inner, southern and eastern suburbs on the West Gate Freeway are advised to plan their trip ahead of time, take particular notice of new signs, make early decisions about which exit to take and allow additional time for their journey into Flemington due to the Monash-CityLink-West Gate (M1) upgrade.
