MCEVOY LOOKS SET TO GET THE CUP RIDE ON GODOLPHIN HOPE

KERRIN McEvoy is expected to be confirmed later today as the rider for Godolphin’s Kirklees in the BMW Caulfield Cup on Saturday week.

Godolphin’s number one jockey Frankie Dettori was keen to come to Melbourne for the ride but will be required for stable runners at the Champion’s Day meeting at Newmarket, the final feature meeting of the English flat racing season.

McEvoy, who won last year’s Caulfield Cup on All The Good for Godolphin, will ride Kirklees in his final lead-up gallop to the Cup at Sandown on Monday.

Meanwhile, there was a change of plans for Kirklees and stablemate Crime Scene at Sandown this morning. Yesterday travelling foreman Tommy Strang said after their work that they would have a quiet day off the track.

Instead, they went for a jog over 1200 metres just to keep them ticking over.

Charlie Henson, travelling foreman for Luca Cumani, said the highly-rated Cima De Triomphe was at his best on “fast going’’, which he hasn’t been able to get at Sandown.

He said the Sandown course proper, which varied from soft to slow in parts this morning after recent rain, was fine for track work but Cima De Triomphe would prefer much firmer conditions in the Caulfield Cup.

Cima De Triomphe and stablemate Basaltico worked separately in two 1000 metres canters this morning.
