STEWARDS REPORTS from SATURDAY'S race meetings at ROSEHILL GARDENS, SANDOWN LAKESIDE and EAGLE FARM:

ROSEHILL GARDENS

RACE 1: Bacardi Untameable Stakes 1100m:

Va Pensiero knuckled on jumping away.

When questioned regarding the performance of Senta De Noche, C Reith stated that the gelding was having its first start for some 12 months and, in his opinion, Senta De Noche ran out of condition in the latter part of the straight. He added that Senta De Noche hung in badly when tiring and for this reason he desisted in riding his mount out over the final 50m. A post-race veterinary examination of Senta De Noche did not reveal any abnormalities.

When questioned, N Rawiller, rider of That’s A Good Idea stated his mount turned its head to the offside just prior to jumping, then jumped away awkwardly and made contact with the hindquarter of Senta De Noche. In the incident Senta De Noche then was turned in and pushed That’s A Good Idea across the heels of Va Pensiero. N Rawiller stated that, with a faster than average pace early in the race, That’s A Good Idea was never on the bit and this resulted in his mount having to race a good deal further back than he had intended. He added that he had anticipated being in the first three horses. He added that, as a result of his mount jumping awkwardly and then striking interference, he was left with a difficult task to make up ground in an 1100m race and he felt in the circumstances That’s A Good Idea finished the race off credibly to finish in third position.

RACE 2: APN Outdoor Handicap 1200m:

Desert Wizard and Campanology were slow to begin. Casino Swoop jumped awkwardly, resulting in its rider, J Cassidy, becoming unbalanced. At the 700m Strong Boy laid in, tightening the ground of Desert Wizard. Campanology, which was following, had to be steadied in consequence. Shortly afterwards Charge Missile, which was racing to the outside of the leader, Casino Swoop, laid in and briefly tightened Turnley. Approaching the 300m Desert Wizard and Strong Boy bumped on a number of occasions, as Desert Wizard endeavoured to come to the outside of Earnest Ernest to improve. Over the latter stages Earnest Ernest laid in under pressure. App. J Kissick, rider of Campanology, reported that his mount laid in badly in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of Campanology did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 3: The Other Woman Todman Stakes 1200m:

Ghibellines was slow to begin and was hampered shortly after when Jabali jumped in. Passing the 700m Unencumbered had to be restrained off the heels of Eqdaam. Rounding the home turn Eqdaam, which was inclined to race greenly, shifted out, taking Scratch Me Lucky and Awesome Rock wider on the track. Cornrow was held up for a run until passing the 200m.

H Bowman, rider of Risen From Doubt, and N Rawiller, rider of Wandjina, were questioned regarding an incident rounding the home turn, whereby these two horses bumped on a number of occasions and became unbalanced. It was established that just prior to straightening, as Risen From Doubt improved inside Wandjina, H Bowman directed Risen From Doubt to the outside of the leader, Lockroy, which resulted in the initial contact between Risen From Doubt and Wandjina. That contact was compounded by N Rawiller contesting the position and turning Wandjina in, whereby further contact was made between Wandjina and Risen From Doubt. Whilst the Stewards accepted that some of the interference was due to the inexperience of the horses, both riders were told that, whilst encouraging riders to ride competitively, in this particular incident both riders had verged on offending the Rules of Racing. H Bowman, rider of fifth placegetter, Risen From Doubt, was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out right to the line.

When questioned regarding the improved performance of the winner, Ghibellines, as compared to its fifth place in the Black Opal at Canberra on 9 March 2014, K McEvoy stated on that occasion his mount got its head up and was inclined to overrace and, as a result, did not finish the race off as strongly as he had wished. He added, with additional fitness from that run, the addition of a crossover noseband in today’s gear and the fact he missed the start, resulted in Ghibellines racing far more kindly today and finished the race off strongly.

RACE 4: Parramatta Leagues Club Reisling Stakes 1200m:

Memorial pulled hard and had to be restrained off the heels of Sheezalady in the middle stages. Near the 300m Twirl, which was inclined to lay in, had to be steadied away from the heels of Mossfun, which shifted out and away from Earthquake (K McEvoy), which was gradually shifting ground outwards in the straight. In this incident Twirl shifted out and bumped Alpha Miss. Near the 150m Twirl again had to be steadied away from the heels of Mossfun, which continued to lay out from Earthquake. K McEvoy was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to make more effort to straighten his mounts.

When questioned, C Reith, rider of Memorial, stated he did not feel the filly appreciated the application of winkers today. Trainer Mr P Snowden indicated he would now remove that item of gear. A post-race veterinary examination of Memorial did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 5: McGrath Estate Agents Sky High Stakes 1900m:

Lunayir reared on jumping and lost ground (2L). Diametric shifted in at the start and hampered Let’s Make Adeal. Desert Jeuney overraced throughout the early and middle stages. Lunayir and Diametric overraced in the middle stages and for some distance approaching the 1000m Diametric was steadied to avoid the heels of Prince Cheri. Approaching the 600m Lunayir shifted out to improved and made contact with Brigantin, which became unbalanced. Midsummer Sun was held up in the early part of the straight.

When questioned, J Ford, rider of Prince Cheri stated that the gelding took up a handy trailing position, but did not respond to his riding when asked for an effort in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of Prince Cheri did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr D Vandyke undertook to report the results of a full vet check for Prince Cheri. He indicated that Prince Cheri would now be spelled.

RACE 6: Hyland Race Colours Ajax Stakes 1500m:

Mouro, at the request of rider C Williams, was vetted behind the barrier and passed fit to start. Malavio pulled hard in the early and middle stages. Passing the 300m Weary shifted out and took Less Is More wider on the track. Monton was held up for a run and approaching the 200m, when taking a narrow run between Malavio and Rhythm To Spare, Rhythm To Spare and Monton brushed, which resulted in Rhythm To Spare having to be steadied by its rider.

When questioned concerning the disappointing performance of Mouro, C Williams stated his mount never travelled strongly on the bit and he was not entirely happy with its action. A post-race veterinary examination of Mouro did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr T McEvoy stated that Mouro is a short-actioned entire, but does not appreciate firm ground, however, Mouro had trotted up well this morning and had trained on well since its win at Flemington on 1 March 2014. Mr McEvoy acknowledged that the run of Mouro was disappointing and undertook to provide the Stewards with the results of a full veterinary examination.

RACE 7: Coolmore Classic 1500m:

Sharnee Rose was slow to begin. Fire Up Fifi overraced on the first turn when being restrained off the heels of Arinosa. Scorpio Queen was held up rounding the home turn and was inclined to lay in in the straight. Gypsy Diamond, which was following Scorpio Queen, was held up in consequence. Real Surreal shifted out near the 200m and bumped Bonaria.

When questioned, C Williams, rider of Hana’s Goal, stated that the mare was aggressive in its preliminary and he did not push it out from its wide barrier. He added this resulted in Hana’s Goal beginning very slowly. He said in future he may endeavour to push his mount out to get away in touch with the field. C Williams explained that, linking up with the course proper, Hana’s Goal knuckled badly and then in the straight could not be fully tested when badly held up. A post-race veterinary examination of Hana’s Goal did not reveal any abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary examination of Arinosa revealed the mare to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer Mr C Waller was advised a veterinary clearance would be required for Arinosa prior to the mare racing again. A post-race veterinary examination of Dear Demi, which weakened after being trapped wide throughout, did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 8: Ranvet Stakes 2000m:

Foreteller and Sertorius bumped at the start.

J McDonald (It’s A Dundeel) and D Oliver (Foriente) were questioned regarding a contest for a position in the one out line on the back of Sertorius in the run to the first turn and were also questioned concerning an incident near the 1300m where both horses bumped heavily. The Stewards found that, with the stalls situated out from the rails, in the run to the first turn when Carlton House commenced to gradually work across to the rails in the lead, with Sertorius to its girth on its outside, as the field made the crossing at the 1800m, It’s A Dundeel, which was on the back of Carlton House, was directed out a half a horse by its rider, J McDonald, which resulted in it coming together with Fiorente and causing Foriente to lose its position on the back of Sertorius, as Carlton House worked over to take up positions on the rail and one out line. Fiorente was then trapped wide for some distance and worked forward around It’s A Dundeel and, passing the 1300m, shifted in and bumped It’s A Dundeel on the shoulder, hampering that runner. Whilst the Stewards considered that the tactic of J McDonald in securing a position one out going to the first turn did not infringe the rules, D Oliver was reprimanded for his action in shifting in near the 1300m and making contact with It’s A Dundeel.

At the 500m Hawkspur had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between Gondokoro and Foreteller.

When questioned concerning the performance of Fiorente, D Oliver stated that the contest for a position with It’s A Dundeel and then being required to stride forward to cross closer to the rail had not assisted Fiorente, but nevertheless he felt the entire was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off better than it did. A post-race veterinary examination of Fiorente did not reveal any abnormalities. Stable representative Mr M Newnham reported that Fiorente had pleased the stable going into the race and he was of the opinion that the contest for the position between Fiorente and It’s A Dundeel had been the principal reason for the entire’s performance.

RACE 9: Cellarbrations Phar Lap Stakes 1500m:

High Tec was slow to begin. At the 500m Woodbine was disappointed when endeavouring to shift off the rails and secure a run between Chatea Lafaite and Liberty’s Choice. Define was held up for a run until approaching the 200m.

When questioned, H Bowman, rider of High Tec, stated that the only excuses he could offer were that High Tec knuckled over linking up to the course proper at the 1400m, it was stepping up in class significantly today and was somewhat back in distance. A post-race veterinary examination of High Tec did not reveal any abnormalities.

When questioned regarding Chateau Lafaite racing forward, G Boss stated his only instructions were not to be aggressive early as the filly can overrace. He added that Chateau Lafaite began well and wanted to run early and, although it had not been his intention to lead, the filly was not inclined to come back underneath him.

When questioned, N Rawiller, rider of Liberty’s Choice, stated that, after being slightly hampered at the 500m when Woodbine endeavoured to come off the fence inside him, the colt failed to respond to his riding in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of Liberty’s Choice revealed the colt to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Stable representative Mr M Newnham undertook to report back on the progress of Liberty’s Choice in the days subsequent.

GENERAL:

The Stewards and members of the Intelligence and Surveillance Unit this morning visited all stables and inspected horses with engagements at today’s Rosehill meeting. No infringements of the rules were detected. Members of the Intelligence and Surveillance Unit then maintained a presence in the stables for the remainder of the morning.

Armani Prince raced wide without cover.

J Noonan (The Spitfire) could offer no explanation for the colt performing below market expectations, other than it may have come to the end of its preparation.  A post race veterinary examination of The Spitfire failed to reveal any abnormalities and trainer Mr D Hayes confirmed The Spitfire would now be spelled.

S Arnold (Lassitude) explained that his mount wasn’t suited to the tempo of the race which resulted in his mount over-racing.  A post race veterinary examination of Lassitude failed to reveal any abnormalities and a swab sample was taken for analysis.

Race 2 – SMART TRACK AUSTRALIA HANDICAP - 1400 metres:

Prior to the commencement of the meeting connections advised that Whitten’s Delight would be ridden closer today.  Whitten’s Delight jumped away a little awkwardly making contact with the side of the barriers and settled worse than mid-field.

Rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight Miss Outshine (NZ) was unable to improve its position due to being held up before gaining clear running approaching the 200m.

B Higgins was questioned after his mount Roxanne Of Sydney lost considerable ground at the start, and he explained that the mare has a very light mouth and as a result threw its head up on jumping away which was the reason whey the mare lost so much ground at the start, and he confirmed when making ground inside the final 200m, Roxanne Of Sydney was held up for clear running over the concluding stages.

Apprentice K Mallyon, rider of Royal Scandal, reported that her mount over-raced in the early stages and as it was noted the mare weakened in the straight, Stewards will follow up with the stable in the coming days.

When questioned, L Currie (Beliveau) explained that his mount wasn’t suited by the manner in which the race was run as his mount settled a long way from the leaders when he was endeavouring, in the early stages of the race, to gain a trail behind the favourite, Pentometer (NZ).  He added he was obliged to race three wide with cover behind Only A Pleasure and for him to improve his position from the 1200m, he would had to have made his run four or five horses wide on the track and as it turned out, the gelding failed to make ground in the home straight in any event.  A post race veterinary examination of Beliveau revealed no abnormalities.

Race 4 – TELSTRA BUSINESS CENTRE DANDENONG HANDICAP - 1600 metres:

Our Valdivia (NZ) sprawled as the start was effected, getting very unbalanced and almost dislodging M Walker.  A subsequent veterinary examination of Our Valdivia (NZ) revealed no obvious abnormalities.

Race 5 – HILTON MANUFACTURING HANDICAP - 1300 metres:

Berdini was a late withdrawal on veterinary advice at 7.44am and co-trainers Mr M Ellerton and Mr S Zahra will submit a veterinary certificate in respect of it.

After the running of Race 4 connections advised that Leia would be ridden more forward today.  Leia settled mid-field before suffering interference near the 1000m.

Apprentice J McNeil (Van Welbilt) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a), the careless riding being that near the 1000m he permitted his mount to shift in leaving insufficient room for three runners to his inside resulting in crowding to Quest For Peace, which in turn caused crowding to Leia which had to be checked and tightened onto the hindquarters of Godiva Rock.  J McNeil had his permit to ride in races suspended for a period to commence at midnight March 25 and to expire at midnight April 3, a total of ten race meetings (three metropolitan, seven provincial).  In assessing penalty Stewards took into account J McNeil’s guilty plea and good record and that the careless riding was in the mid-range.

Native Land was held up on entering the home straight and failed to gain clear running until inside the 200m where it made ground to the winning post under hands and heels riding.

Near the 300m Griante, which was making ground, attempted a narrow run inside of Bulbula and in doing so brushed the running rail and then made some contact with the hindquarters of Bulbula resulting in both horses getting unbalanced.

B Rawiller reported after the race that Godiva Rock did not feel right in its action.  A subsequent veterinary examination of Godiva Rock revealed the filly to have an unusual gait and trainer Mr M Kent was advised a veterinary clearance is required prior to the filly racing again.  Post race endoscopy ofGodiva Rockdetected a degree of internal exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage that may have affected the horse’s racing performance for which it will also require a veterinary clearance.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on Bulbula, K Nisbet confirmed that it was her instructions to go forward and lead from the wide barrier.

Supremacy (NZ), which made contact with the gate when leaving the mounting yard, underwent a veterinary examination behind the barriers and was passed suitable to race.

Wells was slow to begin.

Tax Evader jumped away awkwardly.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on Bel Rhythm, which led, K Nisbet explained that her instructions were to ride her mount with cover off the speed but her mount pulled too hard and therefore was obliged to let her mount stride.

S Arnold (Wales) reported that his mount was required to do some work in the early stages from a wide barrier but was a beaten horse in the early part of the home straight.  S Arnold was further questioned with regard to the tactics today given the horse was ridden in a forward position and he explained that was in accordance with his instructions and highlighted the fact that Wales was only having its third career race start today and it was noted the horse was stepping up to 1600m.   A post race veterinary examination of Wales failed to reveal any abnormalities and a swab sample was taken for analysis.

Race 8 – NOBLE PARK PLATE - 1400 metres:

Trainer T. Gollan was fined $100 for failing to declare G. Colless as the rider of DUPORTH JACK by the prescribed time.

DUPORTH JACK (G. Colless) was slow to begin.

SHADOWSIDE (T. Bell) began awkwardly.

When left racing three wide without cover in the early stages, SHADOWSIDE was allowed to stride forward and cross to the lead.

In the early and middle stages JACK BE QUICK (L. Tarrant) raced very greenly.

Near the 600m WICKED TEMPTATION (A. Allen) put in an awkward stride, became unbalanced and shifted out. Soon afterwards the filly shifted back towards the rail, resulting in DUPORTH JACK being inconvenienced.

Approaching and rounding the home turn SAMBUCA SHOT (T. Harrison) was held up and unable to improve when awkwardly placed at the heels of SHADOWSIDE.

JACK BE QUICK hung in when placed under pressure soon after straightening and had to be corrected by its rider away from the heels of NO PROBLEM (G. Goold). JACK BE QUICK continued to hang in under pressure over the final 300m.

Apprentice T. Harrison reported at scale that SAMBUCA SHOT raced greenly when placed under pressure over the final 300m.

Near the 500m as VAZ DE TORRES (T. Harrison) improved outside the heels of AL NOVA (C. Munce), AL NOVA then shifted out slightly, resulting in VAZ DE TORRES being taken out on to MR HONOR (T. Bell), which in turn shifted out, resulting in FRENCH LESSON being inconvenienced and shifted out wider.

Approaching the 200m PEACE TALKS shifted out to avoid the heels of the tiring AL NOVA.

When asked to explain the disappointing performance of VAZ DE TORRES, apprentice T. Harrison stated that the gelding travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages, however when pressured after passing the 500m failed to respond to her riding and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of VAZ DE TORRES revealed no significant findings. Connections confirmed that VAZ DE TORRES would undergo a full veterinary examination and it would be the intention to send the gelding for a spell.

Stewards sought an explanation from M. Cahill regarding the performance of FRENCH LESSON. Jockey Cahill stated that FRENCH LESSON was able to travel comfortably with a trail in the early and middle stages and although it was forced wide on the home turn, it did not sprint as expected in the home straight and in his view may have struggled under today's weight. A post-race veterinary examination of FRENCH LESSON revealed the gelding to have a laceration inside the nearside cheek.

When questioned, G. Cooksley (KID TYCOON) explained that approaching the home straight he was slightly held up and then a run presented itself between EMOTICON and GAMES. When he endeavoured to improve into this run, KID TYCOON was reluctant to quicken and as he was of the view that the horse appeared to resent racing between runners, he elected near the 200m to shift to the outside of GAMES, after which KID TYCOON closed the race off nicely. Jockey Cooksley stated that connections had advised that KID TYCOON in the past has shown a reluctance to race inside of other horses and he was of the view that it would be better suited where it could be afforded an uninterrupted run to best finish off its races.

QUICK WITTED (T. Wolfgram) lost its off fore plate in running.

Race 4: MOUNT FRANKLIN SPARKLING OPEN H'CAP - 1500m

HIGH KIN (E. Wilkinson) and RAEBURN (B. Richardson) were slow to begin.

In the early and middle stages RENEWED VITALITY (C. Munce) raced fiercely and proved difficult to settle.

Stewards opened an inquiry into the handling of RAEBURN, particularly over the concluding stages of the race. After taking evidence from apprentice B. Richardson, the horse's trainer and master of apprentice Richardson, Mr B. Smith, the matter was adjourned to a time and date to be fixed.

S. Payne (GREY ASSIGNMENT) explained that he had been instructed from the awkward draw to try to have the horse in a forward position, however endeavour to find cover. He said after beginning well he became aware that no horses drawn to his inside were going forward and for this reason he had to make little use of GREY ASSIGNMENT to cross where it found the front. After doing this, LISTEN SON, which he hoped may have crossed, remained racing outside his mount which resulted in him being left in front without cover.

A post-race veterinary examination of RAEBURN revealed no abnormalities.

Stewards sought an explanation from jockey M. Cahill regarding the performance of LITTLE BIT DITSY. Jockey Cahill explained that the horse settled back in the field, which is its customary racing pattern, and made steady ground in the home straight and in his view will be better suited in races of further distance than that of today's event. A post-race veterinary examination of LITTLE BIT DITSY revealed no significant findings.

Apprentice A. Allen reported that MISS ZIZOU raced very erratically rounding the home turn and in the home straight and that he had recommended to connections to remove the blinkers in future race starts.

Apprentice S. Payne was fined $200 for using the whip more than 5 times and consecutively in a forehand manner prior to the 100m.

Race 7: COCA COLA AMATIL BM85 H'CAP - 1200m

On return to scale B. Stewart, the rider of STAR SAMMY, placed 2nd by the Judge, requested to view the film to ascertain whether he had grounds to lodge a protest against THE STOREMAN (T. Wolfgram) being declared the winner. After viewing the film, jockey Stewart decided to proceed with an objection, alleging interference inside the final 200m. On the evidence, stewards were of the view that for some distance between the 200m and the 100m STAR SAMMY did not establish itself into the run between THE STOREMAN and JEFFERSON PARK (M. Cahill) as a result of that runner shifting in slightly. When STAR SAMMY obtained clear running inside the final 100m, it had an unimpeded run to the finish. As stewards were not satisfied that at the relevant time THE STOREMAN shifted out marginally, STAR SAMMY had obtain clear running, the protest was dismissed and correct weight declared on the Judge's placings.

COVERT CHARMOUR (R. Wiggins) began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped with EXOTIC SEQUEL.

EXOTIC SEQUEL raced wide in the early stages.

TICKET TO DREAM (G. Colless) was held up for clear running in the early part of the home straight.

After passing the 200m BRIBIE (T. Harrison) shifted out under pressure, resulting in EXOTIC SEQUEL being tightened for room between that runner and COVERT CHARMOUR. Apprentice T. Harrison was issued with a reprimand and advised to stop riding and straighten her mounts sooner than she did on this occasion.

A post-race veterinary examination of BRIBIE (T. Harrison) revealed the horse to be lame in both forelegs and to have sustained lacerations on the near foreleg. Trainer R. Heathcote will be advised that he must produce a veterinary clearance for BRIBIE prior to its next start.

Race 8: MOUNT FRANKLIN CLASS 6 H'CAP - 1400m

NOOGOORA BURR (A. Spinks), which was fractious in the barriers, was removed, examined by the veterinary surgeon and also by the farrier and cleared to race. This resulted in the start of this race being delayed slightly.

Over the concluding stages DOCTOR DAVID (T. Wolfgram) was inconvenienced slightly inside TRAGEDY (G. Cooksley), which itself was taken in by KURTLEY (P. Schmidt), which shifted in. Apprentice Schmidt was told she would be expected to stop riding and straighten in similar circumstances.

When questioned regarding the performance of DOCTOR DAVID, apprentice T. Wolfgram stated that the gelding travelled comfortably outside the leader but when pressured did not respond to his riding and raced flat today. A post-race veterinary examination of DOCTOR DAVID revealed no significant findings and a swab sample was taken. Connections advised that is the intention to send DOCTOR DAVID for an immediate spell.
