THE new Callaghan Park turf track in Rockhampton passed its final test in readiness for the grand opening on Friday, January 29, when five jumpouts were successfully conducted on the surface on Thursday morning.

One jumpout was conducted from the 1200 metre start and a further four heats were run from the 970 metre position.

Leading Rockhampton riders Luke Dillon and Adrian Coome gave a glowing report into the new surface and are eagerly awaiting the resumption of racing on the grass surface from next Friday.

Stakeholders are reminded that due to the Australia Day holiday on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, nominations for the meeting close today (Friday, January 22) at 11am.

The opening meeting has eight races programmed, with the feature event being the $20,000 Contour Consulting Engineers Cup 1300m. This feature event will see exciting Rockhampton prospect Gobou looking to extend his record to nine wins from just 11 starts.

Queensland Racing’s racing services manager, Mr Paul Brennan encourages all racing enthusiasts in Rockhampton to be at Callaghan Park on Friday, January 29, to witness history with the first race conducted on the grass surface following its $6.5m upgrade.

“Queensland Racing’s commitment to this facility heralds a new era for racing in Rockhampton and will ensure the long term sustainability of racing throughout the Capricornia,” said Mr Brennan.

“The grass track is now one of the best in Queensland, with a consistent width of 25 metres and a straight run home in excess of 580 metres. There are 10 starting positions on the new track and 6.4 kilometres of sub soil drainage that will ensure racing continues at Callaghan Park during periods of heavy rainfall.”

Leading Brisbane rider Glen Colless is venturing to Rockhampton to trial the new facility first hand and his involvement will undoubtedly create a significant amount of interest in the meeting.
