NO LACK OF 'STORIES' DOING THE ROUNDS IN THE NORTH

OF all the racing States in Australia, for some unknown reason QUEENSLAND is the hot-bed of rumor mongering – perhaps it’s the warmer climate. So we have decided to air some of these ‘stories’ doing the rounds in a regular 'BELIEVE IT OR NOT' column.

This week we look at Queensland Racing chairman Bob Bentley’s battle to save the Gold Coast; a suggested solution to the jockeys’ room blues in Brisbane and a couple of tongue-in-cheek tales about history books and senior stewards.

NEW LIQUOR LAWS NOT LIKELY TO AFFECT THE CROWDS THIS YEAR

THOUSANDS of racegoers will converge on country Queensland over the next two days – some heading west for the Birdsville Cup and others to the deep north for the Cairns Amateurs.

They come to party, punt and drink – but this year the latter pleasure will be policed like never before. No doubt copious amounts will still be consumed by the campers at Birdsville but the connoisseurs of Cairns will be restricted largely to the lighter variety.

CALLS FOR THE ENTIRE QR BOARD TO STAND FOR RE-ELECTION

THERE are calls for a controversial Queensland Racing Board election process to be put on hold pending the outcome of a major legal challenge.

Lawyer Bill Andrews, one of five QR Limited directors, is taking civil action after failing to even make the short-list for reappointment to the Board.

MAIR FORCED TO ABANDON VICTORIAN SPRING CAMPAIGN

SUNSHINE COAST trainer Mick Mair has been forced to abort a Victorian spring campaign with Oakleigh Plate winner, Swiss Ace.

Swiss Ace, which dead-heated under the steadier of 68kg when first-up at his home track on Sunday, was found to be sore the following day.

FAVORITES FARE EVEN WORSE AT THE MAJOR QLD PROVINCIAL TRACKS

PUNTERS must be terrible judges at the Gold Coast Saturday and Sunshine Coast Sunday meetings in Queensland when a closer look is taken at the diabolical results of the favorites.

Only eight of 32 favorites were successful at the Sunshine Coast during August while the Gold Coast fared marginally better with 11 of 38 saluting. Short priced favorites have terrible records at both venues.

THREE TOP AWARDS TO WILLIAMS, BRIDGES AND WEEDING

Queensland racecourse managers have been honoured with all three prestigious awards at the 2009 Australian Racecourse Managers' Association (ARMA) Conference hosted in Adelaide this week.

Brisbane Racing Club general manager of venues and risk management, Warren Williams, was awarded the evening’s highest honour, Australian Racecourse Manager of the Year for the second time, for his contribution, involvement, knowledge and commitment in the field of racecourse management.

ON THE 25th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FINE COTTON SCANDAL WE RECALL AN EARLIER 'RING-IN'

THIS month marks the 25th anniversary of the most controversial day in the history of Australian racing when the Fine Cotton ring-in scandal rocked the industry to its foundations.

Never had a more daring scam been attempted on a metropolitan racecourse than the events that unfolded on August 18, 1984, in a Novice Handicap at Eagle Farm in Brisbane.

THIS week we looks at why the Queensland Racing Board is likely to be expanded, furore over interprettion of the licensing rules as they apply to under 18-year-olds being refused entry to racecourses and a suggestion that the 'Sherriff' John Schreck will soon end his involvement with the stewards' panel in the north.
