MYSTERY continues to surround the source of an on course tote malfunction which carved a 'six-figure hole' in what should have been one of the Gold Coast Turf Club's most profitable days.

DANIEL MEERS reports in today’s Gold Coast Bulletin that 30 minutes before the opening race, every TAB server at the track shut down and was unable to be restarted.

HUNDREDS of thousands of dollars in TAB turnover was lost at the Gold Coast yesterday when the on-course system crashed before the first race.

TONY WHITE reports in the SYDNEY SUN-HERALD that on-course punters were unable to wager any tote bets throughout the entire Hollindale Stakes.

THE Queensland branch of the Australian Trainers' Association (ATA) and the Queensland Racehorse Owners' Association (QROA) have scheduled a meeting in response to the Gold Coast Turf Club's move to more than double track fees.

In a Media Release, ATA Queensland president Pat Duff said that the meeting was requested by concerned Gold Coast trainers.

QUEENSLAND Racing Limited (QRL) has announced the appointment of Mr Wayne King as the investigative officer within QRL’s integrity department.

Mr King brings with him fourty years experience in the police service culminating with his position as Detective Chief Superintendent.

IN his weekly column SILKS 'N' SADDLES in the NORTH QUEENSLAND REGISTER, Terry Butts poses the suggestion: 'YOU really have to wonder about our Queensland Government.

From the very top, you have to wonder whether it still wants to govern, because with every day, it seems to enforce policies (racing is at the top of the list) that are all about destruction.

And frankly, the feeling of discontent among the staunchest party members is turning to anger.

The selling of Queensland Racing is a very bitter pill for some to swallow.

HERE is this week’s selection from the e-mail box:

Queensland Racing Limited (QRL) will allow the Townsville Turf Club (TTC) to continue operating in accordance with its license, pending an independent review of the information it has provided.

According to a Media Release prepared by Sequel Communications and posted on the QRL web-site, Chairman Bob Bentley said the racing body’s intervention had been a catalyst for the TTC to take its first urgent steps to rectify the club’s current financial position.

THE Editorial in today’s TOWNSVILLE BULLETIN was again critical of the legislative change that will give far reaching powers to Queensland Racing chairman, Bob Bentley.

We reproduce the Editorial courtesy of News Ltd and the Townsville Bulletin, which says:

‘QUEENSLAND Racing is the most powerful statutory body in the state, because its chairman Bob Bentley has been given carte blanche, free of political interference, to run the racing industry in Queensland.

THE Bligh Labor Government continues their decimation of country and provincial racing with the Mt Garnet and Maxwelton Turf Clubs the next to be targeted in their continuation of disbanding racing in the country regions of Queensland.

Shadow Minister for Racing, Mr Ray Stevens said today that the Maxwelton and Mt Garnet race clubs are the next to feel the heat of the heavy hand of the Bligh Labor Government’s approach to supposedly reforming racing in Queensland.

ANOTHER exciting weekend of racing awaits punters and thoroughbred enthusiasts with the domestic highlight Super Sunday in South Australia complimented by the Run for the Roses in America, the Kentucky Derby.

In an added bonus the Queensland Carnival moves into full swing with the running of the Group 2 Victory Stakes and Group 3 Gunsynd Classic at Eagle Farm on Saturday, whilst in the Territory the Alice Springs Cup will be run on Monday.
